Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges érigées à étalées, poilues.

Feuilles alternes, composées imparipennées, glabres, sans stipules.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, jaunes, d’environ 1,5 cm de diamètre, réunies en grappes de 2 à 4 cm de long. Corolle à 5 pétales soudés à la base, à tube court, à lobes étalés. Calice à 5 sépales soudés à la base, poilus, persistant à la fructification. 5 étamines. 1 style et 1 stigmate. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, grosses baies rouges (tomates), à plusieurs graines.

Calyx with 5 partly fused, hairy sepals, persistent at fructification. 5 stamens. 1 style and 1 stigma. Ovary superior.

Fruits, large, red berries (tomatoes), with several seeds.

Lycopersicon : nom créé par les botanistes [ < λύκος, -ου (nom)

= le loup + (malus) persica (nom) = le pêcher, la pêche ]

= la pêche de loup, en référence à l’ancienne croyance que les

tomates étaient toxiques.

Esculentum : emprunt du latin esculentus, -a, -um (adj.) = bon à

manger, comestible.

Lycopersicon : name created by botanists [ < λύκος, -ου (noun)

= wolf + (malus) persica (noun) = peach tree, peach ] = peach of wolf,

referring to the ancient belief that tomatoes were poisonous.

Esculentum : borrowed from Latin esculentus, -a, -um (adj) = edible.
