Plante à souche ligneuse, hermaphrodite, grimpante, volubile ou s’étalant sur la végétation environnante, à rameaux cylindriques, poilus, de 2,5 à 4 mm de diamètre.

Feuilles opposées, simples, ovales, entières, vert foncé, persistantes ou semi-persistantes, non connées, à pétiole court, presque glabres (jeunes feuilles pubescentes), ciliées, à nervures poilues, de 3 à 8 cm de long, de 2 à 3 cm de large, à base arrondie à presque cordée, à sommet acuminé.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, blanches devenant jaunâtres, de 30 à 50 mm de long, parfumées, groupées par 2 à la base des feuilles, à pédoncule de 1 à 2 cm de long. Corolle bilabiée, en tube étroit et allongé à la base, à poils glanduleux, à lèvre supérieure à 4 lobes, à lèvre inférieure à 1 lobe. Calice minuscule de 3 à 4 mm de long, à 5 sépales soudés. 5 étamines entourant le style, saillantes, à filet blanc très long. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, baies sphériques, noir bleuté, brillantes, de 5 à 8 mm de diamètre, à nombreuses graines brunes.

Plant with a woody stock, hermaphrodite, climbing, twining or spreading out over the surrounding vegetation. Branches hairy, cylindrical, from 2.5 to 4 mm in diameter.

Leaves opposite, simple, ovate, entire, dark green, with a short petiole, persistent or semi-persistent, nonconnate, almost glabrous (youthful leaves pubescent), ciliate, with hairy veins, from 3 to 8 cm long, from 2 to 3 cm across, with a rounded to almost cordate base, with an acuminate top.

Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, white becoming yellowish, from 30 to 50 mm long, fragrant, joined together by 2 at the base of the leaves, with a peduncle from 1 to 2 cm long. Corolla two-lipped, with a narrow tube, lengthened at the base, with glandulous hairs. The upper lip with 4 lobes, the lower lip with 1 lobe. Calyx tiny, from 3 to 4 mm long, with 5 fused sepals. 5 stamens surrounding the style, protruding, with a very long white filament. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, spherical, bluish black, bright berries, from 5 to 8 mm in diameter, with numerous brown seeds.

(Lonicerus ), botaniste et mathématicien allemand (1528-1586).

Japonica : emprunt du latin japonicus, -a, -um (adj.) = du Japon, qui

vient du Japon, en référence à Thunberg, botaniste qui a décrit la

plante lors d'un séjour qu'il fit au Japon en 1775-1776.

Lonicera : name given by Linné in honour of Adam Lonitzer

(Lonicerus ), German botanist and mathematician (1528-1586).

Japonica : borrowed from Latin japonicus, -a, -um (adj) = of or from

Japan, referring to Thunberg, botanist who described the plant during

a visit he made in Japan in 1775-1776.
