Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à souche ligneuse, assez robuste, à poils doux, à tiges anguleuses ramifiées au sommet.

Feuilles alternes, simples, oblongues à lancéolées, entières, densément poilues, souvent embrassantes; les inférieures à base amincie en un long pétiole.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, pourprées à bleues, à veines en réseau, bleu encre ou pourpre foncé, de 7 à 9 mm, réunies en cymes s’allongeant à la fructification. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, groupe de 4 akènes ovoïdes, de 5 à 7 mm, crochus, s’accrochant facilement aux vêtements. Pédoncules des fruits courbés vers le bas et comme renversés.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, with a woody stock, rather robust, with soft hairs. Stems angular, branched at the top.

Leaves alternate, simple, oblong to lanceolate, entire, densely hairy, often clasping; the lower ones at the base thinned in a long petiole.

Flowers radially symmetrical, purple to blue, with blue ink or dark purple veins in network, from 7 to 9 mm, joined together in cymes lengthening at fructification. Ovary superior.

Fruits, group of 4 ovoid achenes, from 5 to 7 mm, hooked, clinging easily to clothing. Peduncle of the fruits curved downwards and like resupinate.

= le chien + γλῶσσα, -ης (nom) = la langue ] = la langue de chien,

nom donné à la plante par Dioscoride, médecin et botaniste grec

mort en 90 apr. J.-C., en référence à la forme des feuilles.

Creticum : emprunt du latin creticus, -a, -um (adj.)

[ < Creta, -ae (nom propre) = la Crète ] = de Crète, qui vient de Crète.

Cynoglossum : borrowed from Latin cynoglossus, -i (noun), name given

to the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD, Latinized form

of the Classical Greek κυνόγλωσσον, -ου (noun) [ < κύων, κυνός

(noun) = dog + γλῶσσα, -ης (noun) = tongue ] = Hound’s-tongue,

name given to the plant by Dioscorides, Greek doctor and botanist

died in 90 AD, referring to the shape of the leaves.
