Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges érigées, poilues.
Feuilles opposées décussées, simples, linéaires à lancéolées, poilues.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, roses ou blanchâtres, de 15 à 20 mm de diamètre, solitaires ou par 2. Corolle à 5 pétales libres, un peu échancrés au sommet, à onglet glabre. Calice à 5 sépales verts, soudés, à poils glanduleux, marqués de 30 nervures longitudinales brunâtres, de forme allongée (de 15 à 25 mm de long) mais s’élargissant et se resserrant fortement au sommet à la fructification. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, capsules de plus de 12 mm de diamètre, arrondies dans leur partie inférieure puis longuement en pointe.

Leaves opposite decussate, simple, linear to lanceolate, hairy.
Flowers radially symmetrical, pink or whitish, from 15 to 20 mm in diameter, solitary or by 2. Corolla with 5 free petals, a little indented at the top, with a glabrous claw. Calyx with 5 green, fused sepals, with glandulous hairs, marked with 30 brownish longitudinal veins, lengthened (from 15 to 25 mm long) but widening and strongly tightening at the top at fructification. Ovary superior.
Fruits, capsules more than 12 mm in diameter, rounded in their lower part then lengthily pointed.

Étymologie / Etymology :
Silene : emprunt du grec ancien Σιληνός, -ου (nom propre)
= Silène, le compagnon du dieu du vin Dionysos, en référence à la
ressemblance du calice gonflé de ces plantes avec Silène, le
compagnon ventripotent de Dionysos.
Conoidea : adjectif créé par les botanistes [ < κῶνος, -ου (nom) = le cône
+ -οειδης (suffixe) = -oïde, qui ressemble à ] = qui a l’apparence d’un
cône, qui ressemble à un cône, en référence à son calice conique.
Silene : borrowed from Classical Greek Σιληνός, -ου (proper noun)
= Silenus, the companion of the wine-god Dionysus, referring to the
resemblance of the inflated calyx of these plants with Silenus, the
pot-bellied companion of Dionysus.
Conoidea : adjective created by botanists [ < κῶνος, -ου (noun)
= cone + -οειδης (suffix) = -oid, resembling ] = which has the
appearance of cone, resembling cone, referring to its conical calyx.
