Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges étalées à pendantes, cylindriques, ramifiées, couvertes de poils glanduleux. Plante originaire d’Égypte et naturalisée sur les murailles d’Héraklion, de Rhodes et de Halki.

Feuilles alternes, simples, cordiformes, ovales à orbiculaires, dentées, vert clair, pétiolées, à poils glanduleux, à base en coin ou en cœur.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, jaune vif, à gorge pourpre, de 30 à 50 mm de long, sessiles ou à pédicelle court, réunies en grappes feuillées, de 8 à 10 cm de long, à fleurs tournées toutes du même côté. Corolle à 5 pétales inégaux, poilus à l’extérieur, soudés en tube à la base. Calice à 5 sépales soudés en long tube, à poils glanduleux, à dents triangulaires courtes. 5 étamines très saillantes, à filet mauve. 1 style mauve, très saillant. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, capsules de 30 mm de long à la fructification, globuleuses, au fond du calice persistant.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stems spread out to hanging, cylindrical, branched, covered in glandulous hairs. Plant native to Egypt and naturalised on walls in Heraklion, Rhodes and Halki.

Leaves alternate, simple, heart-shaped, ovate to orbicular, toothed, pale green, petiolate, with glandulous hairs, with a wedge-shaped base.

Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, bright yellow, with a purple throat, from 30 to 50 mm long, sessile or with a short pedicel, joined together in leafy racemes from 8 to 10 cm long, with all flowers turned on the same side. Corolla with 5 unequal petals, hairy outside, fused in tube at the base. Calyx with 5 sepals fused in a long tube, with glandulous hairs, with short triangular teeth. 5 stamens very protruding, with a mauve filament. 1 mauve, very protruding style. Ovary superior.

Fruits, capsules globose at the bottom of the persistent calyx, 30 mm long at fructification.

Aureus : emprunt du latin aureus, -a, -um (adj.) [ < aurum, -i (nom)

= l’or ] = en or, doré, de couleur d’or, en référence à la couleur

éclatante des fleurs.

name given to the plant by Dioscorides, Greek doctor and botanist

died in 90 AD, probably with a derogatory connotation, because the

plant is poisonous to livestock and humans.

= gold ] = made of gold, gilded, gold coloured, referring to the bright

colour of the flowers.
