Arbuste hermaphrodite, à tiges vigoureuses.

Feuilles alternes, simples ou divisées palmatifides, ovales, dentées, d’un vert brillant, pétiolées.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, rouge vif, parfois roses ou blanches, de 10 à 15 cm de diamètre, solitaires à l’aisselle des feuilles supérieures. Corolle à 5 pétales de 60 à 80 mm de long, munie d’une colonne exceptionnellement longue portant les étamines et les stigmates. Nombreuses étamines. Calice à 5 sépales soudés, doublé d’un calicule. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, petites capsules jaune vert à poils ras rouges, de 8 à 10 mm de long, de 4 à 5 mm de large, composées de 5 valves contenant de nombreuses graines.

Treelet hermaphrodite, with vigorous stems.

Leaves alternate, simple or dissected palmatifid, ovate, toothed, bright green, petiolate.

Flowers radially symmetrical, bright red, sometimes pink or white, from 10 to 15 cm in diameter, solitary at the axil of the upper leaves. Corolla with 5 petals from 60 to 80 mm long, provided with an exceptionally long column carrying the stamens and the stigmas. Numerous stamens. Calyx with 5 fused sepals and with an epicalyx. Ovary superior.

Fruits, small green yellow capsules with red, close-cropped hairs, from 8 to 10 mm long, from 4 to 5 mm across, made up of 5 valves containing numerous seeds.

Étymologie  /  Etymology :

    Hibiscus : emprunt du latin hibiscum, -i (nom), nom donné à la rose

        trémière par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C., forme

        latinisée du grec ancien ἰβίσκος, -ου  (nom), nom donné à la rose

        trémière par Dioscoride, médecin et botaniste grec mort

        en 90 apr. J.-C., en référence à la ressemblance de l’hibiscus avec

        la rose trémière.

    Rosa-Sinensis : adjectif créé par les botanistes [ < rosa, -ae (nom)

        = la rose + sinensis, -is, -e  (adj.) = de Chine ] = la rose de Chine,

        la rose qui vient de Chine, en référence à la région d’origine probable

        de la plante.


    Hibiscus : borrowed from Latin hibiscum, -i (noun), name given to

        the hollyhock by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD, Latinized form

        of the Classical Greek ἰβίσκος, -ου  (noun), name given to the

        hollyhock by Dioscorides, Greek doctor and botanist died in 90 AD,

        referring to the resemblance of the hibiscus to the hollyhock.

    Rosa-Sinensis : adjective created by botanists [ < rosa, -ae (noun)

        = rose + sinensis, -is, -e  (adj) = of or from China ] = rose of China,

        which comes from China, referring to the probable area of origin of the

        plant.
