Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tige florifère simple.

Feuilles alternes, simples, oblongues, blanchâtres-cotonneuses sur les deux faces, les supérieures, qui entourent les capitules, largement ovales à spatulées, rayonnantes et bien plus longues que les capitules.

Fleurs toutes tubulées, réunies en capitules blanchâtres ou blanc jaunâtre de 10 à 30 mm de diamètre. Fleurs du centre du capitule staminées, celles du pourtour pistillées. Involucre demi-sphérique, à bractées inégales, presque planes, jaunes et luisantes au sommet, terminées par une pointe jaune, velues sur le dos, sans bordure translucide. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes sans aigrette, couverts de petits tubercules, rudes sur les bords.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, with a simple floriferous stem.

Leaves alternate, simple, oblong, whitish-cottony on the two faces, the superior ones, which surround the capitula, widely ovate to spatulate, spreading from the centre and much longer than the capitula.

Flowers with only disk-florets, joined together in whitish or yellowish white capitula from 10 to 30 mm in diameter. Flowers of the centre of the capitulum staminate, those of the circumference pistillate. Involucre half-spherical, with unequal bracts, almost plane, yellow and shining at the top, finished by a yellow point, very hairy on the back, without a translucent edge. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, nonfeathery achenes, covered in small tubercles, hard on edges.

Étymologie  /  Etymology :

    Evax : terme de botanique dont l’origine est inconnue,

        peut-être un nom donné en l’honneur d’Evace, roi arabe contemporain

        de Néron, passionné par l’étude de la botanique.

    Pygmaea : emprunt du latin pygmaeus, -a, -um (adj.)

        [ < Pygmaei, -orum  (nom propre) = les Pygmées, peuple mythique de

        nains sur les bords du Nil ] = de Pygmée, très petit, nain, forme

        latinisée du grec ancien πυγμαῖος, -α, -ον  (adj.) = haut d’une coudée,

        nain, en référence à la taille de la plante.


    Evax : botanical term whose origin is unknown,

        perhaps a name given in honour of Evace, an Arab king contemporary

        with Nero, passionately fond of botany.

    Pygmaea : borrowed from Latin pygmaeus, -a, -um (adj)

        [ < Pygmaei, -orum  (proper noun) = Pygmies, mythical tribe of

        dwarves on the Nile ] = of Pygmies, very small, dwarf, Latinized form

        of the Classical Greek πυγμαῖος, -α, -ον  (adj) = of one cubit high,

        dwarf, referring to the size of the plant.
