Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges le plus souvent à bandes alternativement blanches et vertes, striées de rouge, glabres, dressées, cannelées, anguleuses, simples ou rameuses.

Feuilles alternes, simples, lancéolées à losangiques, longuement pétiolées, sinuées, glabres, dentées, rarement entières, souvent farineuses dessous.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanc verdâtre, de 1 à 2 mm de diamètre, réunies en épis ramifiés de 5 à 10 cm de long. Périanthe à 5 tépales libres ou à peine soudés à la base. 5 étamines opposées aux tépales. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, akènes à lobes carénés, complètement cachés par le périanthe. Graines luisantes et lisses.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stems generally with bands alternatively white and green, striated with red, glabrous, erect, grooved, angular, simple or branched.

Leaves alternate, simple, lanceolate to diamond-shaped, lengthily petiolate, sinuate, glabrous, toothed, seldom entire, often floury on the lower surface.

Flowers radially symmetrical, greenish white, from 1 to 2 mm in diameter, joined together in branched spikes from 5 to 10 cm long. Perianth with 5 free or scarcely partly fused tepals. 5 stamens opposite the tepals. Ovary superior.

Fruits, achenes with carinate lobes, completely hidden by the perianth. Seeds shiny and smooth.

Chenopodium : emprunt du grec ancien χήν, χηνός (nom) = l’oie

+ πόδιον, -ου (nom) = le petit pied. Le mot signifie “patte d’oie”,

en référence à la forme des feuilles chez quelques espèces.

Album : emprunt du latin albus, -a, -um (adj.) = blanc.

Chenopodium : borrowed from Classical Greek χήν, χηνός (noun)

= goose + πόδιον, -ου (noun) = little foot. The word means

“goose leg”, referring to the shape of the leaves in some species.
