Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges érigées, arrondies, glabres, finement striées, simples ou ramifiées.

Feuilles à la base et opposées décussées, glabres, celles de la base ovales, pétiolées, peu divisées, vert pâle, souvent teintées de pourpre, les supérieures plus petites, sessiles, souvent lobées.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanches ou roses, de 2 mm de diamètre, réunies en dense corymbe terminal de 1 à 2,5 cm de large. Corolle à 5 pétales soudés en un long tube avec un éperon court à sa base. Une seule étamine. Sépales enroulés sur eux-mêmes, en forme de bourrelet à la base de la corolle et se déroulant en une aigrette plumeuse à la fin de la floraison. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes de 2,5 à 3 mm de long, à pappus de ± 1 cm de diamètre, à calice plumeux persistant.

Leaves at the base and opposite decussate, glabrous, the basal ones ovate, petiolate, little divided, pale green, often with purple marks, the higher ones smaller, sessile, often lobed.

Flowers radially symmetrical, white or pink, of 2 mm in diameter, joined together in dense, terminal corymb from 1 to 2.5 cm across. Corolla with 5 petals fused in a long tube with a short spur at its base. Only one stamen. Sepals coiled on themselves, in the shape of a fold at the base of the corolla and unrolling in a feathery pappus at the end of flowering. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, achenes from 2.5 to 3 mm long, with a pappus ± 1 cm in diameter, with persistent feathery calyx.

Centranthus : emprunt du grec ancien κέντρον, -ου (nom) = l’aiguillon,

l’éperon + ἄνθος, -ους (nom) = la fleur. Le nom latin centranthus

signifie: fleur à éperon, en référence à la fleur ayant une base en

forme d'éperon.

Calcitrapae : emprunt du latin médiéval calcitrapa, -ae (nom)

= chausse-trape (piège à pointes destiné à arrêter la cavalerie).

Centranthus : borrowed from Classical Greek κέντρον, -ου (noun)

= spur + ἄνθος, -ους (noun) = flower. The Latin noun

centranthus means: flower with spur, referring to the flower having

a spur-like base.

Calcitrapae : borrowed from medieval Latin calcitrapa, -ae (noun)

= trap with points used to stop the cavalry.
