Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à souche ligneuse, à tiges étroites, ailées, couvertes de poils feutrés.

Feuilles alternes, simples, oblongues, avec 2 à 5 paires de segments palmés épineux, avec une épine apicale de 10 à 12 mm de long plus ou moins étalée en dehors. Feuilles basilaires d’au moins 20 cm de long. Les feuilles se prolongent en ailes le long de la tige et sont plus ou moins blanches et cotonneuses en dessous.

Fleurs pourpre rosé, réunies en capitules oblongs à cylindriques de 15 à 20 mm de diamètre, solitaires ou par 2 à 3, portés par un pédoncule de longueur variable. Bractées de l’involucre dressées ou un peu réfléchies, recouvertes çà et là de poils arachnéens, à bords épais, plus larges dans le tiers inférieur, rétrécies en pointe épineuse au sommet et portant sur le dos de petites glandes d’un jaune doré. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes grisâtres, visqueux, surmontés d’une touffe de poils non plumeux.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, with a woody stock. Stems narrow, winged, covered in felted hairs.

Leaves alternate, simple, oblong, with 2 to 5 pairs of spiny palmate segments, with an apical thorn from 10 to 12 mm long more or less spread out outwards. Basilar leaves of at least 20 cm long. The leaves are prolonged in wings along the stem and are more or less white and cottony in the lower part.

Flowers purple rosy, joined together in oblong to cylindrical capitula from 15 to 20 mm in diameter, solitary or by 2 to 3, carried by a peduncle of variable length. Bracts of the involucre erect or a little resupinate, covered here and there in arachnoid hairs, with thick edges, broader in the lower third, narrowed in a spiny point at the top and carrying on the back small glands of a gilded yellow. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, greyish, viscous akenes, surmounted by a tuft of not feathery hairs.

Étymologie  /  Etymology :

    Carduus : emprunt du latin carduus, -i  (nom) = le chardon,

        forme latinisée du grec ancien  κάρδος, -ου  (nom) = le chardon.

    Pycnocephalus : emprunt du grec ancien πυκνός, -ή, -όν  (adj.)

        = dense, dru, serré + κεφαλή, -ῆς (nom) = la tête. L’adjectif latin

        pycnocephalus  signifie: à tête dense, en référence aux fleurons des

        capitules fortement serrés les uns contre les autres.


    Carduus : borrowed from Latin carduus, -i  (noun) = thistle,

        Latinized form of the Classical Greek  κάρδος, -ου  (noun) =

        thistle.

    Pycnocephalus : borrowed from Classical Greek πυκνός, -ή, -όν  (adj)

        = dense, thickly, tight + κεφαλή, -ῆς (noun) = head. The Latin

        adjective pycnocephalus  means: with dense capitula, referring to the

        florets of the capitula strongly pressed against each other.
